Creeping Darkness

As a youth,

All I see is light.

The sun shining through the trees,

Warming my heart

The darkness, unknown to me, begins.

First piercing the eyes and mind,

Then the poison oozes down into the heart.

Slowly and slowly

More and more

The darkness creeps into my heart

No one knows but me

I keep silent.

The darkness is cold yet, enticing

The appearance of gold, promising good

Yet giving nothing but death

Will I every be able to get this poison out of me?

Will I ever feel the warmth of the light again?

Has the poison already done the irreversible?

Who knows?

All I can hope for now

Is for the night to fall away

And for the morning to rise again

Warming my heart once more

And taking away the creeping darkness
